Skylab 3:
The Decision to Go
Background: The Skylab 3 mission was the second manned flight in the Skylab program. It was launched July 28, 1973, and returned September 25, 1973. Summertime, and an opportunity.
I was an undergraduate astronomy major at the University of Massachusetts at this time. As such, time, and money was limited. I calculated the cost, persuaded my father that I could be trusted to borrow the VW for the trip. I also assembled the "crew."
Mostly, all communication was done by letters, as email had not been invented, and the cost for telephone calls could eat into travel funds. I realized that if certain methods to economize were done, I could comfortably afford the trip if I had 2 other crewmates. That did it. I could manage to see history.
