Although just a short distance from Silicon Valley, Big Basin State Park could be another world, and not just over the hill.
The coastal redwoods natually thrive in a few areas of Northern California. One location is Big Basin, over the hill, and west southwest of Silicon Valley.
The redwoods we see in this picture are as we see them from a comfortable picnic area in Big Basin State Park.
At the base of this redwood we see fire damage, though the tree clearly survived. Forest fires are part of the natural life-cycle of the coastal redwoods.
This is a smaller redwood at the base.
The tree we see here is obviously much larger and older too. The other interesting part of this one is that this tree has been really damaged. In fact you can walk in at the base.
This is the same tree as in the prior picture. While the crack goes upward, and show eveidence of fire damage, you can see that the tree itself is still very much alive.
